GRATEFUL

Grateful - The beauty of what remains
Sometimes, the smallest things hold the greatest meaning.
Looking at this little bowl of shells and stones, I feel grateful. Grateful for the lovely days spent on the beach with my family. For the sun, the sea, the conversations, the laughter, and all those little moments that, while we are living them, seem so ordinary. Until one day, we look back and realize they were anything but.
These shells and stones are the leftovers. The ones that weren't chosen to travel home with someone, to become part of a magnificent frame in a foreign country, or to be given a special place in someone else's collection.
Instead, they found their way to my desk.
And here they are, bringing me an unexpected amount of joy. Not because they are particularly rare or beautiful, but because they remind me of something beautiful. They carry little pieces of those days within them. And somehow, that is more than enough.
I have been thinking about how easily we can feel like one of the leftovers ourselves.
The ones who weren't chosen. Who didn't quite fit. Who wasn't what someone was looking for. The ones who watched an opportunity pass by, a relationship come to an end, or a dream take a different direction.
It is easy to mistake not being chosen for not being enough. But what if the two have very little to do with each other?
Perhaps we simply weren't meant for that particular frame. That particular place. That particular person's idea of what belongs. It doesn't mean we have lost our value. It doesn't mean there is something wrong with us. And it certainly doesn't mean that our story has come to an end. Perhaps we have simply been left free to find our own place.
Of course, knowing this and truly believing it are two different things. It can hurt to be overlooked. It can take time to let go of what we thought we were supposed to become, or where we thought we were supposed to belong. Sometimes, we hold on to the wrong things for far too long, simply because we cannot bear the thought of having been left behind.
And while we are busy looking for the grand purpose, the perfect place, or the moment when someone finally recognizes our worth, we may miss what is already here. The small things.
A stone warmed by the sun. The sound of the sea. A familiar face across the table. A quiet moment when nothing is expected of us. The simple pleasure of being alive, right here, right now. These things rarely ask for our attention. They don't compete for recognition. They don't need to prove that they belong. They simply are. Perhaps there is something we can learn from them.
We don't always need to be the most beautiful shell on the beach. We don't need to be chosen, admired, or carried somewhere far away to matter. We don't have to turn ourselves into something extraordinary to deserve a place in this world.
Sometimes, it is enough to be where we are. To feel the ground beneath our feet. To notice the beauty that has been there all along.
Maybe the small things don't necessarily point us towards some grand destination. Maybe they remind us that we are already part of something much bigger than ourselves.
And perhaps, at the end of the day, that is what gratitude really is.
Not wishing we had been chosen differently, or that our lives had turned out according to someone else's plan.
But learning to see the beauty in what remains.
And discovering that sometimes, what remains is more than enough.

Simplicity just love it!
