October in the Algarve

I never thought I would say this, but October in the Algarve is slowly becoming one of my favourite months of the year.

There. I said it.

For someone who has always associated the Algarve with long, hot summer days, endless sunshine, and the familiar buzz of the holiday season, discovering the beauty of October has been a rather lovely surprise.

There is something about this time of year that feels different. The landscape, the light, the air — everything seems to take on a slightly different character. Summer hasn't quite left, but autumn is gently making its presence felt. And somehow, the combination of the two creates something rather special.

The magic of the October light

Let's start with the light.

I don't know exactly what it is about October, but the light seems to have a quality of its own. It is softer, warmer, and somehow more forgiving. The landscape takes on beautiful shades, the cliffs glow in the late afternoon sun, and even familiar places can suddenly look as though you're seeing them for the very first time.

Of course, the days might not be quite as hot as they are in July or August. But honestly, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

You can spend time outside without constantly searching for shade, go for a walk without feeling as though the sun is trying to melt you, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being outdoors without having to plan your entire day around the heat.

And then there are the evenings.

The cooler nights bring a welcome freshness into the house. Opening a window and letting the evening air drift through feels wonderful after months of summer warmth. Mornings, too, have their own charm. There is sometimes a delicate layer of dew on the plants, and the air carries that wonderful, earthy smell of nature waking up to a new day.

Autumn is in the air, but summer is still lingering on.

And I think that is precisely what makes October so appealing.

The sea is still calling

October Sea

One of the loveliest surprises is that the sea hasn't necessarily received the message that summer is over.

The water can still be wonderfully pleasant for swimming, especially after months of sunshine have warmed it up. And while the air might feel a little cooler when you first step out of the water, there is something refreshing about it.

But perhaps my favourite part is what happens to the beaches.

The crowds begin to disappear. The busiest stretches of sand become quieter, parking is less of a challenge, and you can find yourself standing by the ocean with nothing much to listen to except the waves, the wind, and the occasional seagull.

No rush. No need to squeeze your towel between dozens of other beachgoers. No feeling that you have to make the most of every minute because the beach is about to become impossibly busy.

Just space.

And sometimes, space is exactly what we need.

There is a certain peace of mind in being able to enjoy a place without feeling that you are sharing it with half the world. You can sit for a while, watch the changing colours of the sea, take a long walk along the shore, or simply do absolutely nothing.

Which, if you ask me, is a rather underrated holiday activity.

So, what can you do in the Algarve in October?

Quite a lot, actually. And perhaps the best part is that you don't need to plan every minute of your day.

October is a wonderful month to explore the Algarve at a slower pace. To discover the little towns, follow a road simply because it looks interesting, stop for a coffee when you feel like it, and allow yourself the freedom to change your plans along the way.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Spend a morning at the beach

You don't have to be a dedicated sunbather to enjoy the Algarve's beaches. In October, they are just as inviting for walking, exploring, taking photographs, or sitting quietly and watching the ocean.

The dramatic cliffs, golden sand, and changing colours of the water are still there. In fact, with the softer light and fewer people around, you might find them even more beautiful.

And if the sea is calling your name, why not go for a swim? The water can still be pleasantly warm, although temperatures naturally vary throughout the month.

Sometimes, the simplest experiences are the ones we remember longest.

Discover the charm of the Algarve's little towns

One of the things I love about living in this part of Portugal is that there is always another little town, village, or hidden corner waiting to be explored.

Without the intensity of the summer season, wandering through these places can feel much more relaxed. You have time to notice the details: the colourful doors, the traditional architecture, the little cafés tucked away in side streets, and the everyday life unfolding around you.

You can stop when something catches your eye, sit down for a coffee, or take a detour simply because a street looks inviting.

No checklist required.

Lagoa

And if you happen to be in the area on a Saturday morning, why not visit the Saturday morning outdoor market in Silves?

It is a lovely opportunity to experience a different side of the Algarve — one that has less to do with holiday attractions and more to do with local life. Browse the stalls, discover seasonal produce, watch people meeting and chatting, and perhaps enjoy a traditional bifana before continuing your day.

Sometimes, getting to know a place is less about visiting its famous landmarks and more about spending a little time where everyday life happens.

Take a walk along the cliffs in Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is beautiful throughout the year, but October offers a particularly lovely opportunity to explore it on foot.

The Carvoeiro boardwalks are well worth a visit. They offer an easy way to enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery, with wonderful views over the cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.

Take your time. Stop to admire the landscape. Look down at the waves crashing against the rocks, notice how the colours of the sea change with the light, and breathe in that salty ocean air.

You don't need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this part of the Algarve. The boardwalks make it possible to experience some of the area's spectacular coastal scenery without committing to a long or demanding walk.

Just remember that the coastal paths can have exposed sections, and the wind can be stronger than you might expect. Comfortable shoes and a little common sense go a long way.

Boardwalk

And when you're ready for a break, I have another recommendation.

With its friendly staff, excellent food, and lovely shop, it is a wonderful place to pause after a walk. Whether you fancy something to eat, a relaxed coffee, or simply a little browse around the shop, it makes a lovely addition to a day exploring Carvoeiro.

Because discovering a place isn't only about the views. It's also about the people, the food, and those little places that make you feel welcome.

A different kind of Algarve

Perhaps what I am beginning to appreciate most about October is that it offers a different way of experiencing the Algarve.

Summer has its own energy, of course. The long, hot days, the lively towns, the beach bars, and the feeling that everyone is on holiday have their charm.

But October asks a little less of us.

There is less pressure to do everything, see everything, and make every day count. The pace slows down. The days are still generous with sunshine, but there is a little more room to breathe.

You can spend the morning exploring somewhere new, enjoy a long lunch, and let the afternoon unfold without much of a plan. You can discover a quiet beach, return to a favourite place, or simply sit outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun on your face.

And perhaps that is the real beauty of this time of year.

It reminds us that a place doesn't have to be at its busiest to be at its best. Sometimes, when the noise fades and the crowds disappear, we begin to notice what was there all along.

The beauty of the landscape. The changing seasons. The pleasure of a simple meal. The smell of the earth after a cool night. The sound of the ocean when there is nobody talking over it.

The little things.

The things that are easy to overlook when we are too busy trying to make the most of everything.

Maybe October is my new favourite after all

I suspect I will always have a soft spot for the Algarve in summer. There is something wonderful about those long, hot days when the evenings seem to go on forever.

But October is making a very good case for itself.

It offers sunshine without quite so much heat, beaches without quite so many people, and a gentler rhythm that makes it easier to slow down and enjoy the moment.

And while the weather can be unpredictable — as it is everywhere — there is still so much to enjoy when the sun is shining.

October Weather in the Algarve

So, if you're thinking about visiting the Algarve, don't automatically rule out October.

Come for the beaches. Stay for the walks, the little towns, the local markets, and the long lunches. Enjoy the changing light, the fresh mornings, and the feeling that you have a little more space to simply be.

You might discover, as I am beginning to, that the Algarve has another side to it — one that reveals itself when summer starts to let go.

And who knows?

You might just find yourself falling in love with October, too.
